Perhaps, if you came up in Portland, you also have a theory about the bar which is the setting for the inexplicable and lovely 2004 song by Jack White and Loretta Lynn Portland, Oregon.

I imagine it in the legendary Hung Far Low.

Last night, Sara and I tromped north east Portland, sampling no sloe gin but a couple choice cocktails and small bites. I expect on that Thursday night there was a pair carousing with a pitcher to go somewhere among the puddles. Times have changed for me, but Portland still holds possibilities and alternatives.

Speaking of alternatives, join us Saturday for our workshop Writing an Alternate Reality at the inexplicable and lovely Rose City Book Pub. We start at 4, you get to co-create alternate worlds, then stay for dinner together.

Books will be for sale, community and creation will be the point.

  • Saturday March 7

  • 4pm

  • Rose City Book Pub 1329 NE Fremont St.

Whenever I got to San Francisco, I like to walk up the hill to Vesuvio Cafe and City Lights Books. As a Portlander, it is important to approach from the proper angle so the Kerouac quote scrawled on Vesuvius appears on your horizon. But Sara and I are in Portland today and not itching to get away at all.

See you at HOCUS tonight if you are going!
